Misspelled words look bad in all walks of life; in medical communications the sheer number of very similar looking words with quite different meanings mean that misspellings do not just reflect poorly on the writer, if misinterpreted they have the potential to change the entire meaning of the message. This problem is, of course, not restricted to medicine however the nature of medicine and its potential impact on people is that correctly spelt medical documents are especially important.
Word processing software with built-in spell checking has significantly improved the quality of written documents in recent years and as medical words fall into common use more and more of them are integrated into the standard spelling dictionaries however there are still many thousands of words that while common to medicine are not everyday words and so show up as spelling mistakes even though they are correctly spelt. Even more worryingly, new medical words are being coined all the time. Word Processors allow you to add new words to a "user" dictionary to supplement the standard dictionary the software is shipped with but it's all to easy to inadvertently add incorrectly spelt words, which then become painful to remove, difficult to share with others and, as words are added, may reduce the performance of your computer.
Grebin's Medical Word List is a "specialist medical lexicon" add-on to the Microsoft Office Suite which sits alongside the existing standard and user dictionaries and adds the correct spelling of more than 90,000* of the latest British English medical words. Because it works alongside the existing dictionaries Grebins will not remove any of the words already saved in either the main or user dictionaries, instead over 90,000 additional words are added.
